Did you know, that over 50 million tonnes of e-waste are produced every single year?
UK business and households alone produce 1.45 million tonnes of e-waste every single year, which places the UK as the second highest producer in the world. Considering that the UK only ranks 80th in size when looking at the worlds land distribution across all countries, it makes you wonder, where does it all go, and how can we possibly deal with such a sizeable amount of waste?
To answer the first part of this question, the UK’s e-waste ends up in recycling centers, incineration centers, landfill, and a large majority (roughly 40%) is illegally exported to developing countries, where its fate usually lies in a landfill, or being burnt.
After reading the answer to the first part of the question, do we really need to answer “how we can possibly deal with such a sizeable amount of waste?” Not very well at all is the answer.
At least, the UK as a whole doesn’t – but you can help to make a significant impact in the UK’s contribution to tackling this absurd amount of E-waste.
